Q3. In 1939 classical vocalist Marian Anderson was scheduled to give a recital at Constitution Hall, but the Daughters of the American Revolution (who operated the Hall) refused to allow Anderson to perform because she was African-American. In response Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes organized an outdoor Anderson recital from the Lincoln Memorial. If you have never heard Anderson sing "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", or "Ave Maria" we recommend it (at 5:27 and 13:30 respectively of the clip linked on the results screen). Had you previously been aware of this performance?
