Q1. In December 2022, Senator Tommy Tuberville (R, AL) wrote to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that he would block promotions for top military generals and admirals until the Pentagon agrees to end its policy allowing troops leave and travel funds for reproductive healthcare, including abortion.

It was estimated that about 650 general and flag officers would come up for promotion in 2023, and Tuberville has blocked 251 thus far, according to estimates.

Which of these reflects your view of Tuberville's stance?

Q2. In a radio interview in May, when asked if he believed that white nationalists should be allowed to serve in the military, Tuberville responded: "Well, they call them that. I call them Americans."

He later criticized Defense Secretary Austin for saying the military was going to root out white nationalists in its ranks. Tuberville condemned racism but declined to say that white nationalism was by definition racist. "That’s your opinion," he told a TV host. Tuberville later altered his stance, telling reporters "White nationalists are racists," adding "I am totally against racism, always have been. I was a football coach. I’ve dealt with more minorities than everybody in this building."

Q3. The National Defense Authorization Act is the name for each of an ongoing series of US federal laws specifying the annual budget and expenditures of the Department of Defense.

Last week, the House passed its version of the bill along party lines. It includes measures restricting abortion access and transgender healthcare for military members, as well as restricting diversity efforts in the armed forces.

Which do you think should be restricted in the military, and generally speaking you do approve of inclusion of social issues, by either side, in the annual defense authorization law?
