Q1. Hurricane Ian, which made landfall on the Southwest coast of Florida Friday, is tied for the 5th strongest storm to strike the US, and has thus far been responsible for over 25 deaths.

However, the 2022 Atlantic storm season is on pace for fewer named storms than the post-1990 average. To what extent do you think man-made climate change is increasing the danger posed by Atlantic hurricanes?

Q2. Ian is expected to cause the 2nd most property damage of any storm in US history, adjusted for inflation. This results from a combination of the storm's intensity and the amount of real estate development in its path.

Vice President Kamala Harris said Friday that federal disaster aid should be “based on equity”, meaning lower-income victims should get priority in damage compensation over higher-income victims. Generally speaking, do you agree with Harris on this?

Q3. Cuba's government made a rare request for emergency assistance from the US, after Ian knocked out power to all 11 million inhabitants. How much aid should the US give Cuba, if any?

Number of named Atlantic storms by year since 1851

Hurricane Alley is an area of warm water in the Atlantic Ocean stretching from the west coast of northern Africa to the east coast of Central America and Gulf Coast of the Southern United States. Many hurricanes form within this area. The sea surface temperature of the Atlantic in Hurricane Alley has grown slightly warmer over the past decades. A particularly warm summer and heavy hurricane season in 2005 led climate scientists to begin studying whether this trend would lead to an increase in hurricane activity.
