Q1. Two Virginia police officers attempted to execute a traffic stop on Caron Nazario, a Black and Latino US Army officer who was driving an SUV that lacked a rear license plate, though the new car had temporary cardboard tags in both the rear and passenger windows. Asked by the police to pull over, Nazario drove about a mile before stopping in a gas station. Nazario later explained that he was looking for an illuminated place in which to do so. Q2. A suburban Minneapolis police officer shot and killed 20-year-old Black man Daunte Wright during a traffic stop. Wright was pulled over for driving with expired plates, and exited the car at the officers' request. Once he did, an officer spotted an air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror, which is prohibited by Minnesota law. After that officers learned a "gross misdemeanor warrant" for Wright's arrest had been issued. The police then tried to handcuff Wright, a scuffle ensued, and in the bodycam video an officer could be heard saying she was going to use her Taser. Instead she shot and killed Wright with her service revolver, and subsequently expressed surprise at having done so. She later said he had mistaken her gun for her Taser.
