Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
Emmi Kurowski, a cleaning lady, is lonely in her old age. Her husband died years ago, and her grown children offer little companionship. One night she goes to a bar frequented by Arab immigrants and strikes up a friendship with middle-aged mechanic Ali. Their relationship soon develops into something more, and Emmi's family and neighbors criticize their spontaneous marriage. Soon Emmi and Ali are forced to confront their own insecurities about their future.
The wildly prolific German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder pays homage to his cinematic hero Douglas Sirk with this update of the filmmaker's All That Heaven Allows (1955). A lonely widow (Brigitte Mira) meets a much younger Moroccan worker (El Hedi ben Salem) in a bar during a rainstorm. They fall in love, to their own surprise—and to the outright shock of their families, colleagues, and drinking buddies. In Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Fassbinder expertly wields the emotional power of classic Hollywood melodrama to expose the racial tensions underlying contemporary German culture.

The Rock
Alcatraz. Only one man has ever broken out. Now five million lives depend on two men breaking in.
When vengeful General Francis X. Hummel seizes control of Alcatraz Island and threatens to launch missiles loaded with deadly chemical weapons into San Francisco, only a young FBI chemical weapons expert and a notorious Federal prisoner have the skills to penetrate the impregnable island fortress and take him down.
Stanley Goodspeed, a biochemist working for the F.B.I. in Washington, D.C., receives a call from F.B.I. Director James Womack shortly after his fiancée Carla Pestalozzi announces she is pregnant. Womack informs Stanley that Alcatraz Island has been taken hostage by Marine General Francis Xavier Hummel, who is holding eighty-one tourists captive. Hummel's actions stem from years of frustration over the government's refusal to pay benefits to families of war veterans who died during covert military operations. The death of his wife Barbara on March 9, 1995, pushed him over the edge, leading him to threaten San Francisco with VX gas warheads unless his demands are met. Stanley, who knows how to disarm the bombs, needs someone familiar with Alcatraz to help him infiltrate the island. That person is former British Intelligence Agent John Patrick Mason, who has been imprisoned for thirty years without trial for allegedly stealing the private files of J. Edgar Hoover. In 1962, John became the only inmate to escape from Alcatraz, and he has a daughter named Jade Angelou. Despite his deep-seated animosity toward the F.B.I., John agrees to assist Stanley. However, when they are sent into Alcatraz with a Navy S.E.A.L. team, Hummel's men kill the entire team, leaving Stanley and John to work independently to rescue the hostages.
